This summer, I was in London. I spent July and August in a town called Twyford, about an hour away by train.
It’s a quiet place with lots of greenery, and I really liked it. On weekdays, I would drive from there to a film set. On weekends, I’d usually take the train into London either Saturday or Sunday—that was my routine for those two months.
At the beginning of August, my family came from New York to visit me. This is about a restaurant we went to for lunch that weekend.
On the dessert menu, I saw madeleines:
Madeleines Half Dozen (fifteen minutes)
Madeleines One Dozen (fifteen minutes)
Since it was dessert, I thought a dozen might be too much, so we ordered half a dozen. They were freshly baked and were so good—we each had two. Honestly, I could have eaten more and wanted to eat more.
I remembered the menu said they take 15 minutes to bake, so I ordered them when our main dish arrived. We had sea bass with runner beans, which was also really delicious.
The restaurant was St. JOHN near Farringdon Station in London. They’re famous for things like roast bone marrow and parsley salad and other meat dishes, but I especially loved their fish.
Next time I go, I’m definitely getting the madeleines, one dozen.
